Science magazine has named the discovery of the quantum machine as the most significant scientific advance of 2010.

Physicists Andrew Cleland and John Martinis from the University of California at Santa Barbara and their colleagues designed the machine—a tiny metal paddle of semiconductor, visible to the naked eye—and coaxed it into dancing with a quantum groove.

First, they cooled the paddle until it reached its “ground state,” or the lowest energy state permitted by the laws of quantum mechanics (a goal long-sought by physicists).

Then they raised the widget’s energy by a single quantum to produce a purely quantum-mechanical state of motion. They even managed to put the gadget in both states at once, so that it literally vibrated a little and a lot at the same time—a bizarre phenomenon allowed by the weird rules of quantum mechanics.

Science reviews some big ideas of the past 10 years and the technologies that made them possible (summaries free; full text requires subscription)

Science and its publisher, AAAS, the nonprofit science society, have recognized this first quantum machine as the 2010 Breakthrough of the Year. They have also compiled nine other important scientific accomplishments from this past year into a top ten list, appearing in a special news feature in the journal’s 17 December 2010 issue. Additionally, Science news writers and editors have chosen to spotlight 10 “Insights of the Decade” that have transformed the landscape of science in the 21st Century.

“This year’s Breakthrough of the Year represents the first time that scientists have demonstrated quantum effects in the motion of a human-made object,” said Adrian Cho, a news writer for Science. “On a conceptual level that’s cool because it extends quantum mechanics into a whole new realm. On a practical level, it opens up a variety of possibilities ranging from new experiments that meld quantum control over light, electrical currents and motion to, perhaps someday, tests of the bounds of quantum mechanics and our sense of reality.”

The quantum machine proves that the principles of quantum mechanics can apply to the motion of macroscopic objects, as well as atomic and subatomic particles. It provides the key first step toward gaining complete control over an object’s vibrations at the quantum level. Such control over the motion of an engineered device should allow scientists to manipulate those minuscule movements, much as they now control electrical currents and particles of light. In turn, that capability may lead to new devices to control the quantum states of light, ultra-sensitive force detectors and, ultimately, investigations into the bounds of quantum mechanics and our sense of reality. (This last grand goal might be achieved by trying to put a macroscopic object in a state in which it’s literally in two slightly different places at the same time—an experiment that might reveal precisely why something as big as a human can’t be in two places at the same time.)

“Mind you, physicists still haven’t achieved a two-places-at-once state with a tiny object like this one,” said Cho. “But now that they have reached the simplest state of quantum motion, it seems a whole lot more obtainable—more like a matter of ‘when’ than ‘if.’”

Science’s list of the nine other groundbreaking achievements from 2010 follows.

Synthetic Biology: In a defining moment for biology and biotechnology, researchers built a synthetic genome and used it to transform the identity of a bacterium. The genome replaced the bacterium’s DNA so that it produced a new set of proteins—an achievement that prompted a Congressional hearing on synthetic biology. In the future, researchers envision synthetic genomes that are custom-built to generate biofuels, pharmaceuticals or other useful chemicals.

Neandertal Genome: Researchers sequenced the Neandertal genome from the bones of three female Neandertals who lived in Croatia sometime between 38,000 and 44,000 years ago. New methods of sequencing degraded fragments of DNA allowed scientists to make the first direct comparisons between the modern human genome and that of our Neandertal ancestors.

HIV Prophylaxis: Two HIV prevention trials of different, novel strategies reported unequivocal success: A vaginal gel that contains the anti-HIV drug tenofovir reduced HIV infections in women by 39 percent and an oral pre-exposure prophylaxis led to 43.8 fewer HIV infections in a group of men and transgender women who have sex with men.

Exome Sequencing/Rare Disease Genes: By sequencing just the exons of a genome, or the tiny portion that actually codes for proteins, researchers who study rare inherited diseases caused by a single, flawed gene were able to identify specific mutations underlying at least a dozen diseases.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations:Simulating the gyrations that proteins make as they fold has been a combinatorial nightmare. Now, researchers have harnessed the power of one of the world’s most powerful computers to track the motions of atoms in a small, folding protein for a length of time 100 times longer than any previous efforts.

Quantum Simulator: To describe what they see in the lab, physicists cook up theories based on equations. Those equations can be fiendishly hard to solve. This year, though, researchers found a short-cut by making quantum simulators—artificial crystals in which spots of laser light play the role of ions and atoms trapped in the light stand in for electrons. The devices provide quick answers to theoretical problems in condensed matter physics and they might eventually help solve mysteries such as superconductivity.

Next-Generation Genomics: Faster and cheaper sequencing technologies are enabling very large-scale studies of both ancient and modern DNA. The 1,000 Genomes Project, for example, has already identified much of the genome variation that makes us uniquely human—and other projects in the works are set to reveal much more of the genome’s function.

RNA Reprogramming:Reprogramming cells—turning back their developmental clocks to make them behave like unspecialized “stem cells” in an embryo—has become a standard lab technique for studying diseases and development. This year, researchers found a way to do it using synthetic RNA. Compared with previous methods, the new technique is twice as fast, 100 times as efficient and potentially safer for therapeutic use.

The Return of the Rat: Mice rule the world of laboratory animals, but for many purposes researchers would rather use rats. Rats are easier to work with and anatomically more similar to human beings; their big drawback is that methods used to make “knockout mice”—animals tailored for research by having specific genes precisely disabled—don’t work for rats. A flurry of research this year, however, promises to bring “knockout rats” to labs in a big way.

Finally, to celebrate the end of the current decade, Science news reporters and editors have taken a step back from their weekly reporting to take a broader look at 10 of the scientific insights that have changed the face of science since the dawn of the new millennium. A list of these 10 “Insights of the Decade” follows.

The Dark Genome: Genes used to get all the glory. Now, however, researchers recognize that these protein-coding regions of the genome account for just 1.5 percent of the whole. The rest of the genome, including small coding and non-coding RNAs—previously written off as “junk”—is proving to be just as important as the genes.

Precision Cosmology: Over the past decade, researchers have deduced a very precise recipe for the content of the universe, which consists of ordinary matter, dark matter and dark energy; as well as instructions for putting it all together. These advances have transformed cosmology into a precision science with a standard theory that now leaves very little wiggle room for other ideas.

Ancient Biomolecules: The realization that “biomolecules” like ancient DNA and collagen can survive for tens of thousands of years and provide important information about long-dead plants, animals and humans has provided a boon for paleontology. Analysis of these tiny time machines can now reveal anatomical adaptations that skeletal evidence simply can’t provide, such as the color of a dinosaur’s feathers or how woolly mammoths withstood the cold.

Water on Mars: Half a dozen missions to Mars over the past decade have provided clear evidence that the Red Planet once harbored enough water—either on it or just inside it—to alter rock formations and, possibly, sustain life. This Martian water was probably present around the time that life was beginning to appear on Earth, but there is still enough moisture on Mars today to encourage scientists seeking living, breathing microbes.

Reprogramming Cells: During the past decade, the notion that development is a one-way street has been turned on its head. Now, researchers have figured out how to “reprogram” fully developed cells into so-called pluripotent cells that regain their potential to become any type of cell in the body. This technique has already been used to make cell lines from patients with rare diseases, but ultimately, scientists hope to grow genetically matched replacement cells, tissues and organs.

The Microbiome: A major shift in the way we view the microbes and viruses that call the human body home has led researchers to the concept of the microbiome—or the collective genomes of the host and the other creatures that live on or inside it. Since 90 percent of the cells in our bodies are actually microbial, scientists are beginning to understand how significantly microbial genes can affect how much energy we absorb from our foods and how our immune systems respond to infections.

Exoplanets: In the year 2000, researchers were aware of just 26 planets outside our solar system. By 2010, that number had jumped to 502—and still counting. With emerging technologies, astronomers expect to find abundant Earth-like planets in the universe. But for now, the sizes and orbits of larger planets already discovered are revolutionizing scientists’ understanding of how planetary systems form and evolve.

Inflammation: Not long ago, inflammation was known as the simple sidekick to our healing machinery, briefly setting in to help immune cells rebuild tissue damage caused by trauma or infection. Today, however, researchers believe that inflammation is also a driving force behind the chronic diseases that will eventually kill nearly all of us, including cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes and obesity.

Metamaterials: By synthesizing materials with unconventional and tunable optical properties, physicists and engineers have pioneered new ways to guide and manipulate light, creating lenses that defy the fundamental limits on resolution. They’ve even begun constructing “cloaks” that can make an object invisible.

Climate Change: Over the past decade, researchers have solidified some fundamental facts surrounding global climate change: The world is warming, humans are behind the warming and the natural processes of the Earth are not likely to slow that warming. But, the next 10 years will determine how scientists and policymakers proceed with this vital information.

There’s something exciting afoot in the world of cosmology. Last month, Roger Penrose at the University of Oxford and Vahe Gurzadyan at Yerevan State University in Armenia announced that they had found patterns of concentric circles in the cosmic microwave background, the echo of the Big Bang.

This, they say, is exactly what you’d expect if the universe were eternally cyclical. By that, they mean that each cycle ends with a big bang that starts the next cycle. In this model, the universe is a kind of cosmic Russian Doll, with all previous universes contained within the current one.

That’s an extraordinary discovery: evidence of something that occurred before the (conventional) Big Bang.

Today, another group says they’ve found something else in the echo of the Big Bang. These guys start with a different model of the universe called eternal inflation. In this way of thinking, the universe we see is merely a bubble in a much larger cosmos. This cosmos is filled with other bubbles, all of which are other universes where the laws of physics may be dramatically different to ours.

These bubbles probably had a violent past, jostling together and leaving “cosmic bruises” where they touched. If so, these bruises ought to be visible today in the cosmic microwave background.

Now 17.4bn km (10.8bn miles) from home, the veteran probe has detected a distinct change in the flow of particles that surround it. These particles, which emanate from the Sun, are no longer travelling outwards but are moving sideways.

It means Voyager must be very close to making the jump to interstellar space — the space between the stars.

Edward Stone, the Voyager project scientist, lauded the explorer and the fascinating science it continues to return 33 years after launch. “When Voyager was launched, the space age itself was only 20 years old, so there was no basis to know that spacecraft could last so long,” he told BBC News. “We had no idea how far we would have to travel to get outside the Solar System. We now know that in roughly five years, we should be outside for the first time.”

No it’s not effecting me that much, I think it’s only a problem of the record labels and big major artists. But for smaller artists and people like me we get very little money from the record sales altogether. The main source is playing live, that’s where the income is coming from. And I possibly think the music is available on the net because there are a lot of people, for example in South America, who could not afford to buy any CDs but this way they can hear the music, the music is available.

Robots just got roped into doing some light housework. Researchers at UC Berkeley used Willow Garage’s PR2 robot to fold towels. The UCB programming used some innovative visual scanning allowing the PR2 to pick up a towel, find its corners, and fold it on a table perfectly.

According to the paper presented at the 2010 ICRA, the robot successfully completed 50 out of 50 attempts to fold a single towel, and also folded 5 out of 5 towels when they were presented in a group. Is watching a robot do laundry really that exciting? Hell yes. We have a personal robot actually performing personal and useful tasks. It’s not dancing. It’s not welcoming you to an expo. It’s doing real work. That’s amazing. But you know what, forget all that, too! You know why this is really great? UC Berkeley used a Willow Garage robot to develop their own sophisticated robotics program. That validates the whole premise of the PR2 — faster development by letting researchers use a common platform. Score one for open source robotics!

He’s serious. The CTO of D-Wave Systems says “massive amounts of money” are now going into artificial intelligence research, because “Microsoft, Google, Apple and other companies all want to dominate the mobile space, and to do that you need compelling applications… All of that requires better AI.”

D-Wave Systems worked with Google on the “Google Goggles” mobile phone app for augmented reality, using their systems to “teach” a neural network how to recognize objects like automobiles, and then transferring those algorithms to the mobile app. And to do it they used subatomic “quantum computing” – a crucial stepping stone to human-level artificial intelligence.

“I’m very excited by the possibility of building very effective unsupervised learning systems and contributing in a meaningful way to the creation of better-than-human level intelligence in machines,” says D-Wave’s CTO, adding “The existence of vast machine sentience is almost guaranteed to occur.”

Another of Newsweek’s ridiculous “conspiracy theory” claims has been debunked after a prominent former Mexican foreign office minister called for a North American Union and a single unified currency, adding to the voluminous reams of evidence that confirm an EU-style integration is being developed for the Americas, a notion Newsweek dismissed as “discredited” in their feeble “Know Your Conspiracies” hit piece.

As we detailed on Monday, Newsweek bosses gave intern David A. Graham the job of debunking the most prevalent “conspiracy theories” circulating today, but the result was a feeble, embarrassing and self-defeating example of lazy journalism that served to make Newsweek look like the real conspiracy theorists, since the majority of issues they denied are manifestly provable and openly admitted, such as the march towards global governance.

One of the claims made in the article was that the implementation of the North American Union and the Amero single currency was a “discredited theory”.

However, prolific Mexican politician and intellectual Jorge Castañeda, Mexico’s foreign minister from 2000-2003 and a global distinguished professor of politics at New York University, wasn’t discrediting the move towards a North American Union in a recent interview with the BigThink.com website, he was staunchly advocating it.

“Well, my sense is that we’re moving closer and closer to forms of economic integration with the United States and Canada and conceivably Central America and Caribbean could become part of that in the coming years,” he said. “I don’t see Mexico as a Latin American country. Too much of trade, investment, tourism, immigration, remittances, absolutely everything is concentrated exclusively with the United States. So, Mexico has to be part of a North American community, a North American union, which at some point probably should include some type of monetary union along European lines with a free flow of labor, with energy being on the table, etc,” said Castañeda.

Newsweek’s source for the claim that the Amero single currency is a baseless conspiracy theory is that bastion of credibility, Snopes.com, which also claims that the entire North American Union issue is a hoax, even as prominent figures in both Mexico and America call for it on a regular basis…

Why is it so difficult to ship?

Ship as in get it out the door. Ship as in make a difference at work. Ship as in contribute your art and vision and expertise and passion to the project you’re working on.

Regular readers of this blog (and of Leo’s life-changing book) have seen first hand what happens when you force the distractions out of your life and focus on what needs to be completed instead. What he has taught us is that when you focus your efforts and energies on things that matter and cut out the stalling and distractions, amazing things happen. It’s absolutely astonishing how much we can accomplish (and insanely disappointing how few people do).

What separates the few who ship from the masses who stumble, stall and ultimately surrender?

The resistance.

Steven Pressfield first wrote about the resistance a few years ago. The resistance is that little voice in the back of your head, the one that tells you that it will never work, the one that insists you check your email one last time, the one that worries that people will laugh at you.

The resistance loves committees and it hates a mission. The resistance creates fear and uncertainty, and it will do almost anything to keep you from being noticed. There’s a biological underpinning to the resistance–your amygdala. The amygdala is the pre-historic portion of your brain, located near the brain stem. It’s responsible for fear and anger and revenge and sex and survival. When the amygdala is aroused, when it feels threatened, when there’s a sense that people might actually laugh at you, it takes over. It rises up in rage and fear and shuts you down.

And so the resistance kicks in. The resistance goes to meetings and plays devil’s advocate (I didn’t know the devil needed an advocate.)

The resistance finds excuses, it makes tasks needlessly complex (or oversimplifies so much that you fail). The resistance uses phrases like, “see, I told you it would never work.” The resistance demands that you study the issue more, or grab a Diet Coke, or go visit those friends who are in from out of town and you won’t be able to see them unless you go right now. The resistance invented yak shaving. The resistance is also responsible for giving you an even better idea just before you finish this one… in fact, the resistance will do anything it can to prevent you from shipping.

Why do little companies get so much more out the door than big ones? Because big companies have committees, groups of people designed to protect the status quo, to prevent failure, to avoid catastrophe. The committee is made up of humans, each of whom is battling her own version of the resistance. “If this ships, my boss will see it, and I might get fired.” “If this ships, a kid might use it, cut of his finger and I might get in trouble.” “If this ships, people are going to think it was my idea, and there’s a chance, just a chance, they might hate it.” Most of all, “if this ships, people might laugh at me.” And so the committee shoots for the lowest common denominator of safety, a product or service or idea that arouses no one’s lizard brain. Which means mediocre. Or late. Or both.

The iPod came from two people, Steve and Jonathan. The Zune came from 250. Which product would you rather own?

The resistance sabotaged my work for years. It pushed me to focus on average topics, delivered in a blameless way, because that felt safer.

So, when others were starting search engines or revolutionizing the online world, I was busy creating sort of ordinary books for sort of ordinary editors who were looking for the next small thing. And no one scolded me for doing this. No one looked at my sort of average work and called me out on it, because they were fighting the very same resistance as I was. It’s surprisingly easy to get through life and make a career out of being average… the resistance would prefer it if you did.

The resistance is powerful, so powerful that all the shortcuts, time savers and focusing tools are powerless in its path. Now you know its name. Now you know how it sneaks in under the radar and sounds quite sensible as it undermines your work and compromises your vision. When the resistance appears, you must call it out. Call it by name. Recognize it for what it is and then defeat it. You will defeat it not by rationalization or even a calm discussion. You will defeat it with single-minded effort, effort so deep and dedicated that it might exhaust you.

Unfortunately, the web is filled with tips and tricks and lists that appear to help you in your quest to shut up the lizard, to defeat the resistance. I say unfortunately because these lists are calm, practical and ultimately ineffective. They are polite in the face of a nefarious enemy, they are rational in the face of screaming insecurity. None of them are working for you because you may not be serious about actually defeating the resistance. It’s fun to procrastinate and comforting to dissemble, because not shipping doesn’t arouse the lizard brain. It’s safe.

The challenge then, the missing link in the Zen Habits is this: you must quiet the lizard brain. You must defeat the resistance. You must find something SO IMPORTANT that it is worth enraging your prehistoric fears, SO IMPORTANT that you can’t sleep until it ships, SO IMPORTANT that yes, you are willing to go through all the hoops Leo lays out for you in order to ship.

Either that, or you could be mediocre instead.

If you have ever wondered about creativity and the zeitgeist, you will enjoy James Rosenquist’s new autobiography, Painting Below Zero, Notes on a Life in Art. It is a richly colored account of one artist’s trajectory from the fifties to the present day, an engaging narrative that tracks his transformation from American country boy to international art star.

In 1955, the twenty-one year old Rosenquist moved to New York from Minneapolis to study at the Art Students League. By 1960, he was supporting himself as a master billboard painter, a member of the Sign, Pictorial and Display Union, Local 230. He worked in a studio in lower Manhattan, in the fabled artists’ neighborhood of Coenties Slip where Jack Youngerman, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, Robert Indiana, Lenore Tawney, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Barnett Newman, and the poet Oscar Williamson also lived. When two union brothers accidentally plunged to their death from their scaffolding, he quit his day job and concentrated on finding himself as an artist.

The Rosenquist we know and love, today seventy-five, took time to arrive at his signature Pop style. By the early 1960s, the art climate was changing: “anti splash was in the air.” A new interest in crisp edges, emotional restraint and ironic content was crowding out Abstract Expressionism’s juicy strokes and evident emotions. Rosenquist’s descriptions of negotiating this changeover are some of his autobiography’s unique attractions. In the late fifties and early sixties, he aspired towards abstraction: ”Everyone was trying to get to zero with abstract painting.” When he decided to make objects and images, he felt he had reached “below zero,” hence the title of the book.

Rosenquist called on his commercial experience working on a colossal scale, where everything seemed abstract because he could never step back far enough to take in the whole picture while he was painting it. In his studio, he first assembled collages of advertisements from vintage magazines. He then enlarged them on canvas to create paintings with mysterious, poetic—and political—juxtapositions of images. His compositions had veiled, metaphoric content but used components that were easy to read.

That not everyone grew to appreciate Rosenquist the Pop artist is brought home by a marvelous anecdote from 1980. Frank Borman, the former astronaut and then president of Eastern Airlines, testily vetoed Rosenquist‘s forty-six foot ”Star Thief” mural for the Eastern Airlines terminal at the Miami International Airport. It seems that when Borman saw Rosenquist’s gigantic depiction of bacon strips floating in outer space, he fumed that the artist was wildly mistaken—he himself had been around the moon ten times and could certainly attest he had never seen any bacon up there. No matter. The canny artist later sold it to someone else.

Large portions of Rosenquist’s Painting Below Zero open a window for us to learn how and when ideas came to him and what he did with them. It is rare for any artist to reveal the genesis of individual paintings, but Rosenquist lets us in on what he was thinking when he first envisioned them in his mind’s eye. Just don’t take his word on matters of fact. Alfred A. Knopf’s copy editors should have caught a multitude of art historical errors. Here are a few examples: Thomas Eakins did not study at the Art Students League but at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; Arshile Gorky and Hans Hofmann were not among the European artists who first came to the US during WW II; they arrived in 1920 and 1933, respectively; and surely Fifth Avenue could not have been taken up by “nothing but horses and carriages” in the 1930s. Perhaps Rosenquist’s most endearing gaffe concerns the bellwether, 1960 exhibition New Forms, New Media. He recalls that it took place at the Michael Jackson Gallery, a slip that is likely causing the late Martha Jackson to moonwalk on her grave.

Sometimes Rosenquist’s text is notable for what it doesn’t say. For example, he talks about going to Europe in 1964for his first show abroad, held at Ileana Sonnabend’ s gallery in Paris. He describes a side trip to Venice that summer, where he found a hotel for his parents for $1.80 a night. Fair enough for nostalgic trivia, but he mentions not a word about the historic exhibition he must have seen at that year’s Venice Biennial, when his close friend Bob Rauschenberg took the international grand prize, the first modern American to win it. In another instance, when Rosenquist gives minimal mention to his tragic automobile accident that seriously injured his wife and son in 1972, I had the impression that crucial comments were left unsaid.

Rosenquist, a colorful raconteur, has been regaling listeners for years. It is to the credit of his literary collaborator David Dalton that the artist’s stream-of-consciousness monologues have been shaped into a generally coherent narrative. And what funny tales it encompasses. Rosenquist describes an incident he observed at the Green Gallery, the gallery that launched his career early in 1962. He watched as the collector Morton G. Neumann picked up and tucked into his pocket a life-size soft sculpture by Claes Oldenburg of a string of sausages. When Neumann let director Dick Bellamy know that he wanted to buy it, Bellamy told him it was already sold. But the collector wouldn’t take no for an answer. They tussled back and forth, and finally Bellamy had to reach over and pull the sausages out of Neumann’s jacket.

There is a hilarious account of the time Rosenquist met Salvador Dali for a drink. When the waiter asked what he would like to have, Rosenquist replied “a screwdriver.” The Spaniard, unfamiliar with American mixology, interpreted his response as a non sequitur, a brilliantly surreal riposte. Too, readers can share the author’s schadenfreudic asides. In a paragraph about Rauschenberg, he detours to mention the sorry case of New York real estate mogul Jack Klein, who once when drunk, fell into a cactus plant and had to have hundreds of spines removed with a pliers.

It is understandable, if odd, that in a few instances Rosenquist quotes himself being quoted by others in interviews that occurred years ago. Our memories are fallible, losing their freshness the more we tap them. The longer we live, the more the details of the past can shift and blur. Yet eye witness narratives are a boon to art historians, who must paw through the past in an attempt to reconstruct and to understand what actually happened. All told, Rosenquist’s Painting Below Zero makes captivating reading for art lovers and art specialists alike.
